Few can write about Britain better than Irish columnist Fintan O’Toole, who tries in this book to discover why the country voted for Brexit. Incisive and eloquent, it should prove entertaining if you already think the mere idea of Brexit is bonkers; if you are a Leaver, it probably won’t change your mind.

 

Autumn

Ali Smith, Penguin, £8.99

Being dubbed ‘the first Brexit novel’ could well have been the kiss of death for the first of Smith’s fourpart series Seasonal, but Autumn was luckily good enough to survive the timely moniker. It is, to be fair, not entirely about Brexit but the referendum casts a long shadow over the characters.
