You Daughters of Freedom: The Australians who won the vote and inspired the world
Clare Wright, The Text Publishing Company, £14.99

With an emphasis on character development, the author accounts for the pioneering role of Australian women in the international suffrage movement, and whose significance as leaders within the British suffrage campaign has often gone unsung. At the end of this 480-page book, Wright confesses: ‘I like big books and I cannot lie.’ Given how the book follows the astonishing accomplishments of five women who lived well into their 80s, the reader ought to be thankful for Wright’s preference.
