Dr Petra Schleiter is a University Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford. Over the last 18 months, her research has focused on “Party Systems and Corruption in Democracies around the World,” a project that is funded by the British Academy. Alisa Voznaya is a doctoral student in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford.

When Indian and Brazilian citizens took to the streets this year in anti-corruption demonstrations, they were seeking to re-establish control over their politicians and to remedy the widespread failure of governing and opposition parties to address endemic corruption.
