Every year over 4 billion tonnes of cement are produced, contributing to around 8 per cent of global CO2 emissions.

This project focuses on the potential for deep decarbonisation in the cement and concrete sector. Using novel analytical methods developed for previous projects to map innovation in low-carbon technologies and the circular economy, Chatham House and Cambridge IP have been undertaking a patent landscaping analysis of the cement sector to identify which companies own patents for relevant technologies and examine networks of innovators and patent owners.

Through expert interviews and workshops we have been exploring the opportunities for and the barriers to scaling up different solutions. The intended outcome of this research is to develop recommendations for key actors including governments, investors and businesses, and identify transferable lessons for other heavy industry sectors.
