Dr Jaroslava Barbieri

Biography
Dr Jaroslava Barbieri is a Research Fellow at the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House.
Her areas of expertise include Ukrainian politics and society, Russian foreign policy, EU security and enlargement, and cognitive warfare. Jaroslava has published over 20 single and co-authored publications, including academic and policy papers. She regularly contributes to international media, including CNN, BBC, Sky News, Bloomberg, France 24 and Deutsche Welle. She is also a researcher for the Ukrainian History Global Initiative, working as the lead analyst on multiple reports on Ukraine in collaboration with the Kyiv-based Public Interest Journalism Lab.
Between March 2022 and May 2025, she was a Project Manager and Strategist at Zinc Network, an international development and strategic communications agency. Previously, she was a researcher for the Arena programme, SNF Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University. Over the years, she has conducted research on Ukraine supported by the UK government, USAID and the European Commission.
Jaroslava has a master’s degree in European Politics from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Birmingham. Her PhD thesis examined the evolution of Russia’s occupation policies in Ukraine since 2014.
