The twice postponed 10th Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference, now scheduled for early 2022, has the potential to reignite commitments to a safe global nuclear order. Yet long-standing treaties have become increasingly politically polarizing, affecting compliance and international cohesion on issues of arms control and nuclear non-proliferation.

With her recent appointment, United States Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, provides her insights into the major challenges facing the current security environment. What more needs to be done to ensure resilient and long-term international arms control measures? In what ways is the Biden administration delivering on its commitment to ‘renewing American leadership in non-proliferation’? And what will success at the next NPT review conference look like?
