HE Ambassador Bankole Adeoye will discuss the African Union’s efforts to tackle conflict, foster security cooperation, and build lasting peace on the continent.

The African continent continues to experience a diverse array of complex security challenges, which remain deeply interlinked with broader trajectories of political governance, climate change, and socio-economic development.

Many of the continent’s most protracted conflicts are notable for their regional implications: whether in the Sahel, where rising violent extremism has coincided with an increase in unconstitutional changes of government; in the Horn, where civil wars in Sudan and Ethiopia have sharpened focus on the role of neighbouring countries; or in the Great Lakes and northern Mozambique, which have both opened debates over regionally led intervention missions.

In pursuit of its ‘Silencing the Guns by 2030’ initiative, over the last two decades the African Union has become an increasingly assertive actor in the continent’s peace and security agenda through mediation, peacebuilding intervention, and political dialogue.

At this hybrid event, HE Ambassador Bankole Adeoye will discuss the African Union’s efforts to tackle conflict, foster security cooperation among its constituent states and regions, and build lasting peace on the continent within an evolving global context.

The event will be broadcast live via the Africa Programme Facebook page.
