24 September 2024 — 1:00PM TO 2:00PM
Labour – Grace 1 Suite, Hilton Hotel, Liverpool

The global trade landscape is in a state of flux. Securing Britain’s relationships with its key partners to enhance the resilience of UK trade are vital priorities amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics. In this environment, economic policy has become intertwined with security, reflected in the Labour Party’s concept of ‘securonomics’.

While prospects for free trade agreements with the US and China are limited, there are opportunities for the UK to reduce trade barriers with the EU, including through the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which is up for review in 2026. Improving the UK’s relations with Europe is crucial to Britain’s economic interests, and many small steps can be taken to enhance UK–EU relations.

Chatham House, in partnership with Getlink Group (Eurotunnel), will discuss:

  • In a more fractured and multi-polar global order, how should Britain best utilize the tools of trade to foster a dynamic economy?
  • What is the Labour Party prioritizing when it comes to Britain’s trading relationships in the short term? How is this focus likely to change in the medium term?
  • How can the public and private sector collaborate effectively to ensure that Britain is keeping up in the competitive digital trade landscape?
  • What role is international development playing in the UK’s broader trade strategy? Is it crucial that this area of foreign policy is given more power and resources?
  • How is the Labour government implementing the concept of ‘securonomics’? What are the key considerations in addressing the current geopolitical context and the way it may evolve after the US elections?
