South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), held its 55th National Conference in December 2022. Voting for senior positions saw President Cyril Ramaphosa retain his leadership of the party with refreshed ‘top seven’ of senior figures in other positions.
The conference took place only days after parliament voted against pursuing an impeachment process against the president and against a backdrop of power outages, high employment rates and reports of corruption undermining public confidence in the government.
At this event, speakers analyse how the conference outcomes will impact the party and the country and what it means for the ANC as it looks ahead to the 2024 general elections.
