Indian Elections: Exercising Democracy

India’s general election, the world’s largest democratic exercise, will begin on April 16, and end almost a month later. More than seven hundred million Indians are eligible to vote – an increase of 43 million since last time. Voting is staggered to make it possible for electoral officials, and security forces, to move across the country and electronic polling allows the outcome to be revealed soon after the ballots close.
