The British television pop contest the X Factor has audiences hooked each weekend as it chooses a new act to try for a Christmas hit. At the same time, Europe has been running a political talent contest, searching for two faces to put fizz into its foreign policy. Both contests have been nail-biting. The holders of the new European jobs find themselves not in a streamlined system as the new front men for Europe, but caught in fresh complexity. Delivering a hit will be hard.
