In November 2013, popular protests erupted in Kyiv’s Independence Square, known as the Maidan. This was the square where the Orange Revolution of 2004-5 overturned the fraudulent election of Victor Yanukovych. Nine years later, the protests were directed against the same anti-hero, this time having been legally elected as president. The Ukrainians were completing the unfinished business of destroying a corrupt political system that had managed to preserve itself.
