Sino-Indian tensions have increased despite greater economic engagement

India’s economic ties with China are booming. Is this reducing strategic competition between them?

There is a growth in economic ties and the current Indian government is keen on tapping into this potential. But few in Delhi are betting that expanding economic ties will help mitigate the tensions between the two Asian giants.

And the fact is that Sino-Indian rivalry has expanded in scope as well as intensity despite growing economic engagement. One new area of competition is the Indian Ocean where Beijing is testing India’s claims to natural primacy.
