The NPT is considered as the cornerstone of global nuclear order. It sets out norms against nuclear nonproliferation and encourages nuclear disarmament under the Article VI commitments of the NPT.
The NPT was extended indefinitely in 1995 but, with increasing polarization in the nuclear weapons policy and disagreements on the best possible ways forward, it is important to bring back attention on the need to make progress on nuclear arms control and disarmament ahead of the 2021 NPT Review Conference.
