Over recent years, Africa has been projected to be the second fastest growing economic region in the world; yet many African countries continued to grapple with inflationary pressures, high debt burdens and soaring borrowing costs. The Africa Programme examines some of the key challenges of job creation, debt financing, climate change and demographic shifts, with the continent’s population projected to reach a predominately youthful 2.4 billion people by 2050.
A multi-year project on Social Norms and Accountable Governance (SNAG) seeks context-specific solutions to address collective problems such as corruption through an evidence-based understanding of the drivers that sustain these problems.
The programme has also hosted representatives from monetary institutions to offer insights on the continent’s economic prospects and priorities for structural and economic transformation. In recent years, we have been joined by Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, president of the African Development Bank Group; Catherine Pattillo, deputy director of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) African Department; and Wenjie Chen, deputy division chief of the IMF’s African Department Regional Studies Division.
