In early 2025, Lebanon elected a new president, Joseph Aoun, and formed a government led by prime minister Nawaf Salam. The new, technocratic government came in power barely two months after a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah ended 13 months of war, and faced a country struggling under a debt-stricken economy.
The Israeli military continues to regularly strike Lebanon. The US and Israel have increased pressure on the Lebanese state to disarm Hezbollah, a move fraught with concerns about further sectarian conflict. A year after the fall of Assad, Beirut’s relationship with Damascus also remains in flux. Meanwhile, many of Lebanon’s people struggle to maintain their livelihoods and access essential services.
In this webinar, a panel of experts will assess the government’s actions during its first year in office, the evolving security landscape, including Israel’s continued attacks and the future of Hezbollah, and steps needed to promote stability and recovery. Experts will also discuss the Lebanese public’s increasing demands for greater state accountability, reform and renewal.
