Panel

A look inside wartime Russia

What impact have Western sanctions, mobilization, propaganda, and the Wagner rebellion had on Russian society?

Event date and time: 17 July 2023 — 17:00 TO 18:00 BST

Event location: Hybrid — Chatham House and Online

Vladimir Putin’s grip on Russia appeared tight. But the recent rebellion by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner mercenary group revealed the president’s weakened position.

Meanwhile, the continuing crackdown on the media, the targeted repression of journalists and the exodus (or imprisonment) of the regime’s vocal critics means that the world’s window into Russia is narrowing.

In this expert discussion, panellists will investigate the impact of the war on Russia, with particular emphasis on:

  • The significance of the recent Wagner rebellion;

  • Wartime adaptations in the Russian state system;

  • The impact of sanctions and mobilization on society;

  • Ideological indoctrination and the propaganda machine;

  • How the war affects pro-democracy movements;

  • Outlooks for ‘post-Putin Russia’.
