Almost a year and a half after the National Assembly declared Juan Guaido the democratic, interim president of Venezuela and almost 60 countries rushed to recognize him, Nicolas Maduro remains in control. In the meantime, the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela continues to boil with growing concerns that a massive COVID-19 outbreak could tear through the country.

The US State Department’s Special Representative for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, will join us to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and COVID-19, recent international commitments to provide relief to the Venezuelan people and the US administration’s Democratic Transition Framework for Venezuela.

Chatham House would like to thank BTG Pactual, Cairn Energy plc, Diageo plc, Equinor, Fresnillo Management Services, HSBC Holdings plc and Wintershall Dea for their generous support of the Latin America Initiative.
