To negotiate with Israel, Palestine needs political unity

After nearly a year of war in Gaza, Palestinian national politics is more divided than ever. Hamas and Fatah must settle these differences to be ready for ‘the day after’, writes Tahani Mustafa.

With more than 70 per cent of Gaza’s infrastructure damaged or destroyed by Israel’s retaliation for the Hamas attacks of October 7, it is difficult to imagine how this 25-mile strip of land can be inhabitable again when the fighting finally ends. 

This also raises the question of Palestine’s political future, and the leadership that might steer Palestinians towards this ‘day after’. None of the proposals for a post-conflict settlement provides an obvious way forward.
