The Future of Australia-UK Relations

Australia’s foreign minister, Julie Bishop, reflects on the current relationship between Australia and the UK.

Event date and time: 18 July 2018 — 12:30 TO 13:30 BST

Event location: Chatham House | 10 St James's Square | London | SW1Y 4LE

Australia and the United Kingdom have historically been partners in protecting the international rules-based order. At a period of great global instability, with the growth of protectionism, populism and the increasing influence of countries and leaders who reject aspects of the traditional liberal consensus, what are the fundamental tenets of this post-Cold War order that should be defended?

Julie Bishop presents the case for further partnership between the two nations aimed at strengthening the global order and safeguarding individual freedoms.

  • How can Australia and the UK work towards such a goal?

  • And in what ways can further engagement on trade and bilateral investment talks help reinforce this mission?
