Since 2020, a power struggle between Ethiopia’s federal government and the political leaders of the Tigray region has evolved into a military conflict and humanitarian crisis across northern Ethiopia, that threatens to destabilize the Horn of Africa. The United Nations reports that Tigray stands on the edge of a humanitarian disaster: with only ten per cent of required supplies reaching the region since July, its population is running out of food and medical supplies, including those crucial for treating malnourished children and women.
Chatham House will be screening Voice of America’s documentary showcasing the story of the complex political situation and humanitarian crisis in Tigray. The event will feature opening remarks by the documentary’s director, Heather Murdock followed by a conversation and Q&A with leading voices and experts on Ethiopia’s civil conflict.
The following questions will be considered:
- What started the war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region and what is sustaining the conflict?
- How is the conflict affecting Ethiopia and its neighbours?
- How can the international community help de-escalate the humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia?
This event is part of Chatham House’s ongoing work on the future of conflict.
Upon registering for this event, you will be automatically registered for the networking reception taking place from 19:15-20:00 GMT, should you wish to attend.
