In recent years, Egypt has confronted a series of regional conflicts that are reshaping its position in a dynamically changing neighbourhood. The ongoing war in Sudan has exerted significant humanitarian and security pressures on Egypt’s southern border, while instability in Libya continues to the west. On Egypt’s eastern borders, Israel’s war in Gaza has tested Cairo’s role as a regional mediator. Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea have caused Egypt a significant loss of revenue from Suez Canal traffic, further stressing its struggling economy. Shifting dynamics between regional powers, including external powers such as the US and China, add further uncertainty to Egypt’s position.
In this webinar, a panel of experts assesses how Egypt is navigating these regional conflicts and competitions and discusses implications for its management of policy priorities and the constraints it is operating under. The discussion seeks to identify what these dynamics mean for Egypt’s role within the Middle East and North Africa, and its influence across the African continent more widely.
- How can Egyptian diplomacy best engage to address, or at least mitigate, the threats that it faces?
- How can Egypt manage its relations with external states, such as the UAE, that have a different posture in regard to the war in Sudan?
- How can Egypt balance its relations with the US amid growing public anger at Israeli policy in the region?
