Russia’s war of aggression is taking a heavy toll on Ukraine’s armed forces, its wider population, its economy and its infrastructure. Despite this, the war effort continues to be sustained, both by the strength of the Ukrainian people and the support of allies in Europe and beyond. As pressure mounts to bring about a cessation in hostilities, the question of what a just peace would look like for Ukraine remains open to debate.
At this event, hosted by Chatham House, human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize-laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk shares her perspective on the impact of the war on Ukrainian society, and what support Ukraine needs from its allies to continue to resist Russia and work towards a just and lasting peace.
Key questions to consider include:
- What is the impact of the ‘total war’ that Russia is waging inside Ukraine/an update on what’s happening inside Ukraine?
- What is giving strength to Ukrainian society to resist and what is the outcome they expect to achieve?
- How can Ukraine’s Western allies support resilience and maintain peace when hostilities stop?
The event is held on the record and followed by a drinks reception.
