Dr Yu Jie
Senior Research Fellow on China, Asia-Pacific Programme
Biography
Dr. Yu Jie is a Senior Research Fellow for China, Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House, where she focuses on the interplay between China’s domestic political economy and foreign policy.
She is a seasoned commentator in major international media outlets, including BBC News, the Financial Times and Foreign Policy, and regularly briefs senior policymakers from G20 governments and leading intergovernmental organizations. In July 2025, Project Syndicate recognised her as ‘one of the most notable female voices’ in global affairs.
Dr. Yu also advises FTSE 100 companies and major global financial institutions on China’s macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape. She has provided expert testimony on China’s foreign affairs to several UK Parliament committees.
Previously, she served as Head of China Foresight at LSE IDEAS, where she continues to be an Associate Fellow. Before joining academia, she worked as a management consultant at the London office of Roland Berger, specializing in Chinese state-owned enterprise investment in Europe and market-entry strategies for European multinational companies.
In 2018, the London School of Economics and Political Science recognized her as one of its ‘Leading Women’ for her contributions to teaching and public engagement on China’s foreign affairs.
She is also a Young Leader at the Shangri-La Dialogue. Dr. Yu currently leads a Horizon Europe research project, funded by the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation, focused on advancing China studies and policy research.
