How to bolster food security through global early-warning systems

Extreme weather events and turbulent geopolitics are severely impacting global food security. While there are monitoring mechanisms in use for certain single hazards (e.g. flooding) that can impact food production, these systems often have a narrow focus and struggle to provide appropriate and timely information to at-risk communities.

This paper focuses on the development of early-warning systems for food security that adapt current hazard monitoring practices to be better equipped to deal with more complex, cascading risks. This approach requires greater international, regional and local collaboration across different communities of practice. Central to this are agreements on sharing data and the clarification of responsibilities, as well as pooled funding and alignment with other sources of climate finance.
