For most of his lengthy political career Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been a divisive force in Israeli and Middle Eastern politics. However, as the wail of ambulance sirens signalled the rush to hospital on a cold dark night from his remote farm in the Negev Desert following a massive stroke, many, at home and abroad, were united in praying for his well-being.
