France moves to the right? Consequences for Europe

Experts discuss the implications of political change for France’s ability to project its foreign policy and the wider power balance in Europe.

Event date and time: 11 July 2024 — 12:00 TO 13:00 BST

Event location: Online

Following the closing of ballot boxes for the European Parliament elections on 9 June, President Macron of France called a snap parliamentary election after a disappointing return for his Renaissance Party. With growing support for the far-right and weak popularity, the President’s election call has been as seen as a gamble.

Similar results also left Chancellor Olaf Shultz’s diminished. The repercussions could be felt across the bloc and world. With a new political landscape emerging in Paris, Berlin and Brussels, where does the EU go next?

This session will explore:

  • What do the election results mean for President Macron’s ability to influence the EU’s strategic agenda?
  • How would Franco-German relations adjust to the new political composition?
  • How would a stronger far-right presence at both a national and EU level impact EU foreign policy?
