Amidst a turbulent region, Iraq enjoys a period of relative stability. Stable and high oil prices enable Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s government to focus on infrastructure development and begin charting a path away from the conflicts that have marred the country for decades. He also works on enhancing ties with neighbouring countries and renegotiating relationships with international partners, while steering Iraq away from the violent conflicts that have torn apart its neighbourhood.
Can Iraq’s relative stability endure? Underlying political, economic, security, and regional challenges threaten to disrupt the status quo and dampen hopes for Iraq’s continued recovery and growth, with further implications for an already war-torn and precarious region. The country’s youth still grapple with high unemployment, while regional conflicts risk further spillover into Iraq. The recent fall of Assad’s regime in neighbouring Syria and the ensuing political transition have significant implications for Iraq’s security and regional relationships, as does the incoming Trump administration in the US.
