— Analysing potential end-state scenarios for the war on Ukraine.

In this discussion, the panellists will examine potential end-state scenarios for the war, its dynamics of escalation, and the unsettling echoes of 1914 and 1939. They will also explore how the war is transforming Russia itself.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 shattered the post-Cold War security architecture and disrupted the rules-based international order.

Vladimir Putin has stated that the war is not merely a territorial conflict but a contest over much broader and fundamental issues; it is about ‘the principles on which the new world order will be based.’ What are the issues that Russia is trying to settle, and what kind of outcome will satisfy its ambitions?

Key questions to be discussed during this event include:

  • Do historical parallels with the 20th century  suggest we are witnessing the prelude to another world war?
  • Are we seeing the birth of a new kind of conflict, one shaped by new technology as well as ideology?
  • How is the war reshaping Russia internally?
  • How should Europe and NATO prepare to deal with the Russia that emerges from this war?
  • While Ukraine is fighting for its national survival, is this war equally existential for Putin’s regime?
