Katja Bego
Senior Research Fellow, Europe Programme
Biography
Katja is a senior research fellow in Chatham House’s Europe Programme. Katja’s primary expertise lies in topics related to European security, strategic autonomy and competitiveness, as well as the geopolitical and geoeconomic competition over emerging technology. She has a particular interest in topics related to Europe’s role in a rapidly changing global order, tech sovereignty, and economic and grey zone warfare.
Her upcoming book Deep Connections: the hidden battles to control subsea cables, which looks at the geopolitical and geoeconomic competition over undersea cables, will be published by Polity in summer 2026.
Katja was previously a Senior Research Fellow in Chatham House’s International Security Programme, where she was also the co-editor of the Journal of Cyber Policy.
Prior to joining Chatham House, Katja managed the Emerging Technology team at the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office and was the head of the future internet portfolio at innovation foundation Nesta. While at Nesta, Katja led the €3 million NGI Forward project, the strategy arm of the European Commission’s flagship Next Generation Internet programme, which set out a technology sovereignty agenda for the continent.
She regularly advises policymakers and comments in the media on issues at the intersection of technology, geopolitics and security.
Katja holds an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Wellesley College, and an MA in the History of War from King’s College London.
