John Dumbrell has written a useful survey of the evolution of the Anglo American special relationship in the second half of the twentieth century. In just over two hundred pages, he has not been able to include much narrative or supporting evidence. The reader needs some basic knowledge of the events referred to and has to rely on the author’s judgement without being able to test it against evidence. Fortunately, it is sound and the verdicts on the episodes recounted fair and balanced.
