International peace can only be achieved if democracies replace the world’s remaining dictatorships; and Mark Palmer is explicit that despots can and must all fall down.
An American diplomat for 25 years, Palmer was ambassador to Hungary in the late eighties; he set up the Community of Democracies in 2000, served on the board of Freedom House, and established media firms in eastern Europe. In his words, ‘I’ve bet my career, my money, and much of my adult life on the possibility of a fully democratic world.’
